Tremor is common in several movement disorders as essential tremor, Parkinson’s disease, or dystonia. Tremor is the most common movement disorder. Upper limb tremors hamper the independent life of 65% of those suffering from them, greatly impacting their quality of life. Tremor is commonly managed with drugs or surgery, but these methods have important associated risks and limited efficacy. This project aims to develop a new non-invasive neural interface for tremor suppression based on closed-loop stimulation of relevant nodes for tremor generation and propagation in the central nervous system. The interface will extract information about ongoing tremorgenic activity in the brain and spinal cord, which will be used to distort tremorgenic activity in relevant areas of the central nervous system. The project will also study the temporal properties of brain-muscle rhythmic interactions in patients with tremors to find new strategies for tremor suppression.
