Cardiac arrhythmias, defined as abnormal heart rhythms, represent a common cause of mortality in industrialized countries. The project aims at providing novel computational tools to extract, model and interpret clinically relevant information in the context of three highly prevalent disease conditions predisposing to arrhythmic complications. By gaining knowledge on the physiological mechanisms through biomedical signal processing and in silico modeling and simulation techniques, we expect to provide novel tools to guide decision-making. This is foreseen to improve, in the medium and long run, the financial sustainability of the healthcare systems. The obtained computational tools and methodologies are planned to be transferred to hospitals, pharmaceutical companies and medical equipment suppliers that have already manifested interest in the project outcomes.
